>>9568713word. the short version is that he originally lost a shield with a high level devil in it and decided it was his responsibility to get it back so he left the party to do it. today we ran through what's happened since where he got the shield back only to have it immediately stolen from him by another high level devil the party's relatively chummy with. in order to keep taking responsibility he signed a contract saying that if the devil returned him home free of his hellish ailments and kept the devil on lock down inside the shield that he would come back within his lifetime to take it back by force. if he failed to do so the devil could have his soul and free the devil in the shield
so now while the party continues to explore hell and deal with problems barret will be "off screen" back home moving up the guard ranks, amassing forces, and training to eventually come back to hell for the shield
