To those that are having trouble with the idea of some hard to detect particles being used to make physics equations balance, consider the history of the neutrino. Neutrinos were first proposed in 1930, in order to balance out conservation of energy equations. So they were basically "dark matter" for decades until they were directly detected. Thus, the idea that some even harder to detect particles explain various astronomical observations isn't that out there. Both modified gravity & dark matter theories should be taken seriously, but so far dark matter ones do a better job of explaining at explaining various observations, especially cases where we see gravitational lensing but no visible matter.
