Yahweh is sometimes depicted as a dragon-like creature that breathes fire and smoke. This is a metaphor that conveys the depth of Yahweh's anger.
God sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died (Numbers 21:6). The people were convicted that they had sinned and asked Moses (their mediator) to pray that the Lord would take away the snakes. Moses did pray on their behalf, but the Lord did not grant the request. Instead, He told Moses to make a snake of bronze, and put it on a pole. Then, when any one was bitten by a snake, and looked at the bronze snake, he lived (Numbers 21:7–9).
