If some are interested in old log house construction:
The entire building is made out of spruce, though sometimes the lowest beams are made of pine. Spruce has far better isolation effect than pine, but pine has better water/humidity resistance.
Buildings were always made out of fresh wood, not dried. (Easier to work with)
They made beams instead of using whole (round) logs, because a beam has less fully intact (year)rings, what reduces the twisting (during drying) of the beams.
The roof was always carried by logs (as twisted as possible, with as much tight and intact rings as possible) and never carried by beams. (for stability reasons)
