Most societies opposed conversion, more specifically, some members got baptised for political reasons but were completely unwilling to renounce their gods and condemn them as demons.
Lithuania is a very late example. People assume they were simply isolated and ignorant of Christcuckery but the reality they were very much exposed to it and also Islam and never converted, until there was political pressure to do so. The truth persists without force, it's only lies which need to be enforced by force.
Also, Christians worship death and were obsessed with suicide to become martyrs. Christian martyrdom originates from Antiochus IV's policies, like ban on circumcision. Jewish women would rather die than stop mutilating the penises of their infants.
