The shape and the animal species where never fully determined. At the time, it was wether a big wolf or a werewolf. But the behavior, the physical habilities and the shapes of the wounds made by the beast make it hardly associable with wolf. Thus people just called it "the beast" and tried to stop it (it took three years and the animal killed 130 people). Now the most probable explanation is a serial killer disguized as a wolf.
