Hello retards, land surveyor here; the earth is an oblate sphere that if you took away the atmosphere would look like a pressed tumored orange (pic related). Geodecy is an applied science build uppon thousands of years of experimentation, that still goeas on today every time you count any plot on the field and oh my lord! we are still getting confirmation that the earth is at the very least spherical, this shows even more the bigger the triangles are. I have learnt these ten years that I've been counting triangles into muddy fields, mountains, lakes and islands that the eyes are the worst thing to trust, appart from being a primitive organ (can only see a a limited spectrum, luminescence etc) it is unreliable compared to the mathematics that make the science of counting triangles, an actualy reason why with the digital age we have moved from the humble analogic theodolite to get measurments (and then ofc apply the mathematical models) to laser (LIDAR) and radio (aka electroptical scanning) to clearly and with way greater accurancy with an error of a few millimetres. Not to mention the newer shit like in areas like aeral drone orthoimaging etc, in a few decades we will just need a couple of drones with a mobile total station to accurately map everything to the picometer
