They started to adopt Western ideas when they realized they would be left in the dust and destroyed if they didn't become a world player. It's pretty respectable that they held out as long as they did. And yes, their society is as dysfunctional as Europe and the US from a cultural standpoint. That's Postmodernism at work. But that can and will change over time.
