Now, the whole destiny thing is cool, but what if in reality this whole thing was instead just inevitable to begin with? Or, to put it in another way... They can't change the way this timeline is because they themselves would cease to exist.
It might not be the same kid each time they check their little device, but they would have no way of knowing if it is or isn't. A sort of quantum uncertainty.
