The Old Testament forbid mixed marriage because to marry someone from another tribe meant you would end up worshiping their religion and false idols rather than God. Moses smashed the tablets because the Israelites were worshiping Molech after leaving Egypt.
The New Testament forbids marrying a non-Christian for the same reason. It has nothing to do with race, but has everything to do with faith in God rather than heathenry.
