They seem odd and far away to many people with their different looks and customs. It speaks to a perceived unbridgeable difference between races ; you can also draw parallels with their invasions and immigration. I would guess that this analysis is contemporary and if you wanted to bring it further back they also serve as a parallelism to the percieved threat of communism. Many aliens back then operated as a hive mind. Which reflects a perversions of the collectivist conscience saght by many left ideologies
