In a way this lack of will is also a factor of talent, although schooling being leveled down to the lowest common denominator is an issue for sure. All in all the line between talent and diligence, nature and nurture or crystal ability and elasticity is not as clear as an autist might want it to be, but that's besides the obvious meaning of the idiom.
