You know that some military research is kept from public view right? Just because the studies that are available to us don't show us the full potential of the technology doesn't mean they still won't develop it into that potential and use it against us. Why should we only worry about it when it is fully operational? You are being naive if you think they are just going to hit a wall with this tech and it won't advance any further.
