It's related to their evolution on the Eurasian Steppe that was windy and cold thus they have slit eyes and produce more mucus. Ever notice how being out in the cold produces a runny nose? It's a physiological reaction to cold air. The Asians that had an extreme version of that were less likely to die of hypothermia but now that get more severe reactions to mucus producing diseases.
