There are a few well-meaning researchers and quite a few bad actors in all of this, and it all ties into the military-industrial complex and their interest in biosecurity. Essentially, there's this sort of attitude where "If China and Russia are doing this, we should be doing it just as fervently", which makes sense. But when the arms race is to figure out how to mind-control entire segments of the population to alter their political affiliations, mood, satiety, and other characteristics, we really have to call a halt to the whole thing, because we're talking about trespassing on human nature, here.
