By the 4th century BC the smallest denominations were often struck as appropriately sized bronze coins, but prior to then bronze coins weren't well known or trusted and "small change" was indeed minuscule, with silver fractions of a larger standard unit like a Drachm or Stater being made as small as 3-4mm in diameter and around ~0.03g (30 milligrams), actual coins with designs weighing as little as 1/1000th of a troy ounce.
