My mom wouldn't let us have our own computers and my Dad would sneak us laptops slated for destruction from work. If my mom caught us with one she would literally chuck them down the stairs and then just assume the thing was destroyed. They were thinkpads and could take a beating and sometimes would survive multiple instances of being thrown down the stairs. My Dad had an endless supply of thinkpads so my mom thought she was destroying a different computer each time but sometimes she actually was.
There was so much tech trash (this went on for a few years) that my Dad got annoyed and started bringing home panasonic CF-29 toughbooks and at that point my mom just gave up, justifying it not in defeat, but agreeing that we were old enough to have our own computers. I still have mine, the hard drive died due to 'the click of death' a decade ago, i replaced it, and it recently died within the past year due to the same reason
