Probably better if there's not much kanji to start off anyway. In my experience when you're trying to learn by reading and then alternating looking up stuff it can feel cumbersome initially but contrary to how it may feel it actually helps you remember things more when it's such a hassle if you forget it. I used that approach when I was studying spanish.
