So when you start abuse you implement a trigger, for example the monarch butterfly that is around, or start off with a certain phrase. Then this abuse gets associated with that trigger and this brings forth the behavior of the abused personality you try to shape and form. At some point, to protect the original one the trigger is enough to make the personalities switch as those behaviors, memories and personality itself are linked to that trigger. you can probably use drugs and hypnotism too to enhance the effects. LSD was heavily used in the MKUltra experiments for example.
