I was just using it as an example for people here to think back, as in "hmmm... yeah, where were we exactly in 2007?" and the answer is, about where we are today.
Yes, some individual aspects have gotten a lot better. Computer vision and locomotion, like I said, are dramatically improved since then. But the idea of a general purpose AI, one that would be able to emulate human behavior even at an incredibly basic level, just isn't happening anytime soon.
Here's what I (halfway) expect to show up and assume dominance before waifubots: VR. With VR and the internet, you basically have access to all of humanity in, even with our extremely simple current technology, a fairly intimate fashion. So while it's obviously not the same as real life waifubots, it's certainly in the same ballpark of alleviating loneliness. I think we'll see VR go mainstream decades before we even approach waifubots.
Trust me though, I fucking hope I'm wrong.
