Apparently the word originally meant "sausage" though, which I guess is why black pudding is called that. But in most contexts, when a Brit says "pudding", they mean any kind of sweet dessert eaten at the end of a meal.
Americans use "pudding" slightly differently, they use it to refer to a particular kind of dessert, one which looks like custard. I don't know exactly what it is though, because I've never had it.
