both sides bring the same stale talking points to the table, and try to "own" each other rather than reach a consensus (which you'd need if you want your views to translate into actual political action). the audience is not there to learn either. most of them are already decided, and only show up to cheer for their own team.
the side that's best at slinging insults usually "wins" the debate. the part of the audience who supported the winning side can pat each other on the back, while the supporters of the losing side becomes more silent than usual. no one actually changes their mind.
