The population is split between ethnic Italians and ethnic Austrians. The main city, Bolzano, is mostly Italian while the small towns and the valleys are mostly Austrian. Bolzano is like 70/30 and the rest is probably close to 20/80.
There's also another population living here, the Ladins. They occupy a few valleys and are Raetho-Romans.
I am ethnic Italian. My grandparents migrated here from Veneto, Lombardy and Trentino.
I don't like the people in Bolzano at all. Part of what eventually pushed me to the right over the years is my identity or lack thereof.
Alto Adige is the only place in Italy where the local (Italian) population doesn't have a dialect. The real languages of Italy are the local dialects, not the Italian language, that was pushed by Mussolini (and Masons before) to unify the country (read globalize it).
In just two generations I lost all identity from my grandparents. I don't speak their languages. I don't eat their food. I don't wear their dresses. I have no relationship whatsoever with their lands (excluding maybe Trentino).
The place is beautiful and I love it but I don't think Italians belong here. For their sake and for the sake of the Southtyroleans they should leave.
Yesterday I hiked pic related, got to Piz Boe. Didn't like it much, too many people, there's a freaking hut at the top. Not too hard, just 1000m elevation gain, beautiful when there aren't many people.
