For me the only character I heard of before watching was Junior Soprano because I watched the clip of him thinking he sees himself on TV, and the clip of him getting annoyed at the courtroom sketch artist, and that intrigued me enough to watch it. And he turned out to be one of my favourite characters because he's funny.
If the sopranos existed in 2025 it would be tony being like "whatever happened to polly coopah, you know the mental autarky type" but then he spends the show watching tutorials and reading wikipedia articles instead of imagining what's in them
