Stay away from alcohol. Know your triggers. Know what are the cues that make you go on auto-pilot to get some of it. Do not associate with alcoholics or other alcohol drinkers. Force yourself to do time consuming things in your free time so you don't think of alcohol. For me, an hour or two on my bike helps me stave off the vices, as well as giving me lots of exercise. Choose something that will keep you occupied and away from your alcoholism triggers.

And most importantly understand that quitting alcohol, if you're an actual alcoholic, is a long term project. Do not get discouraged if you relapse a few times, what matters is that you're trying and gradually lowering the amount of alcohol you're drinking. As long as you keep increasing the time between each time you drink and the amount you drink keeps getting smaller you are still winning.

In the past people used to believe alcoholism was an incurable disease for a reason. Back then only extreme religious fanatics were known to achieve to quit alcohol for good. Which reminds me that drinking alcohol is against one of the most basic precepts of my religion and makes me feel guilty for the few beers I drink each weekend. Damn.
