If a spacecraft traveled at just 1/10th the speed of light, and it hit a speck of dust along the way, the energy released would be roughly equal to that of a 1 megaton nuclear bomb.
There is no magic shield or indestructible material that can withstand such impacts.
Space is not perfectly empty and is not safe to traverse that way
