I felt like the devs might have heard too many people complaining about DS2 and praising DS1 over it, that they kind of took it a little too far with all the throwback levels. It was nice, but some scenes and references felt recycled in a bad way. I know Souls games have always had recurring reference characters, all the way back to Patches the Hyena, but DS3 just felt cobbled together from old resources at some times.
