This conflict by ethnicity is way older than their race politics, and due to its connections with culture and language, it is far more legitimate. Asking for a state for Somali's (They already have one, I know.) is far more reasonable than asking for a state for "Africans".
Another issue with race politics is that a lot of this shit originates in America. They brought in Italians, the Irish, and Slavs, which were not considered White in previous era's, but are now included in the race. This malleability of the definition is a significant weakness for developing the idea. It expanded before, so couldn't it expand later, or even contract?
Racial politics also doesn't directly select for the traits you would want in your society. Intelligence, conscientiousness, and good values are not connected to one race or another. Even if they were correlated, you would still be accepting people of poor character into your society based on their race. You don't want criminal Irishmen roaming your streets do you? If you focus on selecting for valuable traits instead of race, you can get the results you are looking for. Selecting for race is not worth it.
In an age of democracy, mass politics is extremely useful, when including people for their skill and ideas, you have a better chance at creating the society that you would want to raise a family in. Focus on ideas, not biology.
