The dwarves and elves are both representations of the dead/ancestors, but the dwarves are known to be great smiths. This is a symbolic representation of an old ritual where a child would retrieve possessions, especially weapons, from the burial mound of his ancestor, in return for being "reborn" as that ancestor and carrying on (and receiving) his honor. The elves are more of a symbol of the influence and love of the dead, in a sense the spirit of the dead were conceptualized (religiously) as being two separate things at once.
