>>16246250well new jersey is really a new jersey probably named off the old jersey (just jersey) in the united kingdom. its a lil island in the english channel near france. new hampshire also from old hampshire (just hampshire) a county in england.
new york, probably from some important dude since there are multiple counties in england named after york (north yorkshire, east yorkshire, west yorkshire, etc) but maybe it was one big place that got divided into those smaller places.
but if you dont like the 2 georgias whats your proposed solution then? because different countries have different names in different languages. georgians apparently call their country საქართველო, romanized: Sakartvelo and i dont know any other sakartvelo. i never even knew one sakartvelo until now. the closest thing i knew is sacramento the capital of california.
but my point is should there be an international body governing names of countries? what about cities and towns? and what does it do about current problems like georgia and georgia? do they just let that stay because both already kinda claimed it and people already associate with them so the governing body only adjudicates over names of new entities?
