I think my soul was born into this "character" as you call it, by choice. If that's the case don't we owe it to our true selves to fully explore the person we chose to be born as on this go around? This is exactly why all the good religions and philosophies emphasize the importance of childlike innocence and even more importantly PLAYFULNESS.
Play your part and have fun with it, that's the meaning of this life. Unity with the source will be there for you when you die either way.
