the normal guy with the plain shirt is 'toss' own self insert character. he is usually portrayed as right-leaning but mostly apolitical. the pink haired guy used to be an archetype used by 'toss for gay people, but he mutated along the way and is now used for progressives in general.
despite their differences, these two characters appear to be friends. 'toss has made several comics where they hang out and have discussions about various topics.
in this comic in particular, the pair try out vegan meat. veganism is associated with political progressivism. the meat doesn't look very tasty, and the plain guy is hesitant to try it. the pink guy tries to convince him. his argument - that the vegan meat "identifies" as meat - is a reference to gender discourse among progressives.
the joke is that two different facets of progressive discourse and lifestyle are combined
