Notice it does not say he is the propitiation for our sins only, and could be for the sins of the world. NO! Jesus is the propitiation not only for our sins (the believers) sins but also for the sins of the whole world AT THIS TIME! Christianity tells us Jesus could pay for our sins IF we believe.
John tells us Jesus has already paid for EVERYONES sins. The payment has already gone through. Jesus has not only paid for the sins of those who believe but for those who do not believe.
At the cross Jesus bought everyone as a slave. He paid for them, now he owns them. Jesus at this moment is already Lord of All (Acts 2:36, Eph 1:20-22) and the savior of all mankind, especially [not exclusively] of believers (1 Tim 4:10). Jesus is already everyone’s Lord and savior. Right now we do not see everyone obeying Jesus buy we will in time (Hebrews 2:8, Philippians 3:21). All of Jesus slaves will obey him in time. Now why bring this up? According to the laws of God a man can not be a slave forever. At the jubilee a slave must be set free. This is a prophecy of the end when Jesus after having perfected all his slaves and having subjected them unto himself, then Jesus subjects himself to God, the Father, and God will be all in all (1 Cor 15:22-28). The law of God not only limits how long someone can be a slave (a max of 50 years, till the next jubilee according to the laws in Lev 25:9-13,25-28,35,39-55), but also how much you can beat a slave, 40 lashes of the whip is the maximum, and if the Slave dies and does not recover in 1 or 2 days the master is supposed to be punished (Deuteronomy 25:1-3, Exodus 21:20-26).
