it's not even entirely their fault, "advisor" should be it's own separate position with people who's primary job is to learn about all the quirks in the different academic tracks, how those tracks interact, and edge cases then spend time preparing for their meetings with students so they can take a deep enough look to identify what the best options for that individual are.
instead some professors are just told that once a semester a bunch of students will come to them and they need to recommend what classes those students should take and that's about it.
