The soul would pass down bloodlines and manifest or obtain new attributes as it went. A coward would have coward grandchildren who may have to redeem themselves of their (grandfather's) cowardice while a hero would have a heroic bloodline. This would encourage warriors to produce sons and fight to ensure their souls only become more brave and virile over generations.
In Ireland that kind of backfired in that our people became sex obsessed. Fairies are weak to penetration, monsters are defeated by sex, goddesses make rivers by peeing and Ulster men fuck horses. Virility became so important to the Gaelic spirit that we needed to fuck everything.
