I feel that most people follow societal cues as to what to do with their lives, and do so blindly. There are consequences to this. I guess if we look at the situation from an evolutionary psychological viewpoint, those people who blindly follow societal cues to reject family life, and engage in sexual promiscuity will simply be erased from the gene pool.
