The proper understanding is that we are in God (‘For in him we live and move and have our being' Acts 17:28) but not God. That would be like an electron saying he's the multiverse.
The distinction is between theosis (Christianity) and apotheosis (Luciferianism in its many forms).
In theosis, see ourselves as being capable of emptying our egoic will and channeling God's perfect will, by cooperating with God's grace. By this we attain alignment with God, but not equivalence with God.
Apotheosis (which is what esotericists like Smolley will sell you), on the other hand, is about relishing in "God-awareness," whereby enlightenment is attained when you realize you're just as much God as anything else. This is the oldest and most seductive heresy, the serpent's "Ye shall be as Gods!" is but one example. It's Satan's mistake, and the path to hell.
