A decade ago in my city they decided to add roundabouts at major intersections. It worked fine if the traffic was low, but when the traffic volume increased, cars started to pile up, forming really long lines. I remember one time I waited for 30 minutes just to reach the roundabout, on a 2-lane road and city with a population of around 250k.
The city was forced to transform them and build an overpass over the roundabout, so that people that just want to go forward take the overpass, but if you want to go left or right, you enter the roundabout.
It works pretty well that way.
