I gave a vague answer and said the present perfect is used for recent events while past simple is used for things that happened long ago. It wasn't wrong, but it wasn't the first answer you find in textbooks. Then he brushed me off and said they're saving me for their online courses (they aren't). Next time I will totally revise grammar.
