What happens most often is you're being sent on a mission in a certain country for a fairly long period, ranging from a few months to possibly years. generally, you don't know where it's going to be. Although, most ambassadors and assistants nowadays get some sort of specialization early on, so you know in advance what part of the world you will go to at the very least. I've always moved a lot in my life, so I don't find it daunting to travel left and right. There are also some monetary benefits that come from such a profession.
But if I can't do it, i'd be fairly contempt with a cushy and calm job somewhere.
