Look at a place like Texas, "wide open planes" right? Except no, the maximum distance between structures is maybe 3 kilometers, which is within effective range for a tank. Which means arty will have to be dug in in the dozen or so towns and suburbs, and anyone out in the open will be shelled to fuck.
It's meters, not miles, across the entire planet. It's why I think armour is so important and why I think current US/NATO doctrine is woefully inadequate.
