Two historic symbols from centuries ago even pagan times. Basically 'best what we and this land-soil can give, we give you'. Back in the day people belived salt is some kind of omen, sybol of happiness and prosperity. And for Christians- bread is a symbol of body of Christ. etc etc. Mostly folk tradition.
