My grandfather had a bunch of grain silos that raccoons would get into, and he used a 22 if he was on the roof and a pellet gun pistol if they were close enough that he worried the bullet might bounce back.
My uncle has a bunch of woodchucks and raccoons at his place. He's got cage traps to capture them, and then he kills them with a mallet. Seems to gruesome for me.
