You have to do something with the leaves or else they pose a fire hazard, especially around your home.
Now if you want to keep them for fertilizer, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But you will need to mulch them or rake/blow them into a compost type pile. Also it's evident you think piles of leaves decompose during the winter. They will stay around along time, especially if they are in piles.
