If you go back 20 years, even things like your Xbox 360 CPU was custom designed by IBM and they put in specific instructions to make it more optimised for games. But when they hired a strong independent woman CEO she cut back all of that, because the R&D process for such things requires up front capital, years to see results and get a return on investment. She went for shorter term strategies like putting more money into consulting or doing share buy backs. It did pump the price. It meant you had one less serious player in the chip market.
