Atrazine is a manufactured herbicide that does not occur in nature. It is an endocrine disruptor that causes hormone imbalance. According to the 2018 City of Toronto Drinking Water System Annual Report Toronto tap water contains 0.1140 – 0.1180 ug/L (1 ug/L = 1 ppb) concentrations of atrazine.
>National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (2010)>Atrazine-exposed males were both demasculinized (chemically castrated) and completely feminized as adults. Ten percent of the exposed genetic males developed into functional females that copulated with unexposed males and produced viable eggs. Atrazine-exposed males suffered from depressed testosterone, decreased breeding gland size, demasculinized/feminized laryngeal development, suppressed mating behavior, reduced spermatogenesis, and decreased fertility. These data are consistent with effects of atrazine observed in other vertebrate classes.
