This is why there can be an interpretation of Othello with Patrick Stewart as Othello and everyone else being black, or why Ulysses or O Brother Where Art Thou can provide variations on The Odyssey. The original author touched on something unchanging in human nature, which is why we refer to these works as classics. He showed people themselves and gave them direction, just as prior authors did before him in a long causal chain. This is what people do: they discover and create and others take up the mantle. People do not advance by attacking the author and then concluding that their creations must therefore be terrible, and people who do such things are the poorer for it because they deliberately shut out wisdom and knowledge. It's only their pride that tells that they are richer. Then again, you're dealing with men who think they're women.
