Examinees tend to tune out the rest of the tape once they believe they have found the answer, alternatively if they really have they might come to doubt it by listening until the end. What is being evaluated here is not comprehension of the language as much as attention and memory. So chances are you understood what was being said but were tricked into thinking the correct answer was A instead of B.
