It's not only about looking. There is that sort of inbetween stage of consciousness that you have right before you fall asleep. If you manage to stay conscious enough to think about and visualise certain things you will sometimes dream of that once you fall asleep. Lucid dreaming as bad as you know it's not real. The regular way is best as, if you do it like me, it all feels very much real.
A dream journal helps a lot with remembering them in detail.
