Only few lightyears from earth (maybe max 30-50) are planets or outposts on planets that have some form of "alien" life (humanoid one).
Then a bit further maybe 100 lightyears are larges communities of aliens or real home planets of some.
Also some aliens likely live mostly in space inside movable asteroids, small moons, and they fly in them (like possibly Oamuamua). Or just huge ships, miles and miles long.
Theres simple too many eyewitness cases for them all to have smelled swamp gases.
This Phobos moons (phobos is mars moon) anomaly thing could have been one.
Phobos moon itself could be a space ship as its surface looks carved.
